The company
Sakami Ranches started in 2004 near Kitale. The family owns it. It holds a grower's export licence, so it sells directly to European buyers instead of through a chain of traders.
In the peak picking season more than 100 women work on the farm.
The problem
The farm depended on coffee. The coffee price moves a lot, so income moved with it. At the same time the water supply was unreliable, and the yield suffered.
What we did
We financed more than 100 additional acres, two water reservoirs, solar pumps and modern equipment. The solar pumps cut the running cost of irrigation.
Our team rebuilt the financial and operational analysis behind the crop plan. Sakami now grows coffee, macadamia and avocado. The farm also restored riparian forest and built partnerships with neighbouring farms.
The result
More than 100 extra acres are in production. Water use is cheaper and more reliable. The farm sells into premium markets, and no single crop price can decide the year.
