The company
Egg Production Uganda Ltd started in 2019 in Mityana District. Women's Bank, part of the FCA Group, founded it. The plan was to build to 25,000 layers.
The company buys maize from smallholder farmers for feed, so its growth pulls income into the farms around it. It employs 14 young people directly.
The problem
The company was 18 months into the build when the pandemic arrived. The economy closed. Staff became ill. Construction stopped. Then the egg price collapsed.
What we did
We attached the capital to an operating mandate. Our team worked on production planning, financial management, and a route into the premium segment of the market.
The loan and the work were one agreement. The company did not have to find and pay for four different advisers while it was fighting to stay open.
The result
EPL moved into the premium segment, structured its route to market, and signed long term contracts. It kept its focus on the income of the female smallholder farmers who supply it.
